Advices from experienced ones. To graduate course from a senior friend. Short reference book for thesis defense

Here it is, the final frontier. Behind the practice, are small things like state exam and defense remain - and here it is, the coveted diploma under a storm of applause of classmates and of Dean, who still does not believe in what is happening.

About thesis. This is your qualifying work, ie work / project, by the quality of preparation and defense of which, the State Examination Board decides whether to award you an academic bachelor's degree or specialist qualification, or to ask for "repeat next year." By the way, to get the "unsatisfactory" on defense - is extraordinary rare case, teachers talks with more irony about it, than about bad marks on exams. Because the "unsatisfactory" for the discipline - it is, besides the lack of knowledge of the material, and another set of circumstances (confused / mixed / high volume / "this is just the ticket is not taught, but I know everything, but they did not ask .." and so on. ), while for thesis such an attitude does not fit into the consciousness of leaders: still, write it whole academic year and not even to retell it on defense ... It is also a great minus to a teacher - maybe no one say it load, but it is for sure that colleagues will discuss, and so bad if the "educational feats" graduate became a byword for the entire university, and they can say what was "negligence" and "not done the job properly". Guided by these considerations uncomplicated, the manager will attempt to or actually squeeze the juices from the lucky to defense than to blush at it. Frankly, task of your head, in addition to verification of research - as well to prepare the student to defend and explain the procedure, features and tactics.

Assuming that the knowledge and experience are not redundant, sharing my own.

1. The preparatory work. The choice of topic and supervisor. I advise you to think about it in advance, otherwise all good (= relevant, interesting and promising) topics together with the responsible and intelligent leaders will be taken by your far-sighted classmates. The theme should be: interesting to you, first of all, with a good bibliography fed, statistics, and practice; relevant, that is either too hot or discussion, or both. The supervisor of the thesis - the teacher with the graduating department (depending on specialty), and better to choose someone who will actually work with you and not let things slide. Usually there are no problems with choosing supervisor: many to-end of the previous year know about whom they would like to defend diploma - it's personal authority of the teacher, and his research interests, and personal qualities. As a rule, better to negotiate with the teacher about leadership, and then with him to choose a topic, write a statement and a plan for this preparatory work.

2. The choice of place of practice. Thesis should reflect not only the level of theoretical knowledge, but also the ability to apply them in practice, well, at least to determine what belongs to the subject. So do not miss the opportunity to professional pre-diploma practice in an organization that has the most direct relevance to thesis. In short, if the subject of thesis - bikes, then go to either the appropriate plant / design department, or repair / bike rental, or a cycle track / biking team because in auto racing or "Formula 1", whatever they might seem prestigious , you will not find material. Of course, if we are not talking about the opportunity to stay to work at the place of practice, and you do not like the organization - but then you had to choose a theme with an eye on the prospects for J.

3. Work on the work. There are 2 options: either to write by yourself, or somebody writes it to you by request. The second option, at first glance, seems to be simpler and more common, but there are some pitfalls. First of all, who will write. It is good if that person of the same profession, because otherwise you will have a lot of blunders and inconsistencies, and a simple misunderstanding of the Executer of what and how to compose thesis. As a result, if the supervisor requires, you will most likely rewrite it, but then it will not be so much time. Second, even if somebody writes the theory for you, you will seek to prescribe the text itself for practice. Third, the main danger lies in the fact that, even if the work is done at the level of Ph.D., you do not know and do not understand the logic of the author, you cannot just to represent it on defense, "will sink" on questions of the commission, and by this you will show the origin of the work.

To write the thesis by yourself, of course, is more difficult, but it does not worth. If responsible relation of a supervisor is attached to your thesis – then your thesis will be the best, believe. And commission will be sure that you know the theme and you are oriented in material, that also is taken into account in giving a mark.

4. Making your thesis. Technical design is regulated by state compulsory standards of RK (SPSE) 5.03.016 -2009 "Rules for the execution of the thesis (project) in higher educational institutions of the Republic of Kazakhstan" (date of introduction September 1, 2009). Many universities have Manuals for writing and design of the diploma work, but double-check the year of publication - SPSE will have an advantage, as approved by order of the Minister of Education and Science. Here you will find the requirements for the structure and volume of work, examples of design elements of the work, the parameters of text, illustrations, drawings, and applications.

5. The procedure of defense. It will be explained to you by the supervisor or the responsible department for conducting preliminary defense (pre-defense). Pre-defense is conducted one month ahead before state exam / defense, to check readiness. Strictly speaking, by this time about 80% of thesis should be ready: most definitely, the introduction - the conclusion and designing can be refined later. Pre-defense is needed in order to assess the readiness of students and to simulate the situation of thesis defense, for example, by showing what and in what sequence occurs.

The defense can be divided into stages by structure:

1) presentation of graduate. You are introduced, the theme of thesis is announced and you are invited on the tribune. You have 10 minutes for your speech. During this time you have to cover for minimum :

- actuality of the theme (why you chose it, why it is important);

- main conclusions of thesis (establishing of problem or setting or solving a problem).

In addition to these key points, you can stay on the goals and methods of performance of thesis, the extent of investigation, to illustrate examples by figures in the conclusions. It is allowed to bring a copy of your thesis with you on the tribune to be oriented on the place, one copy will be with commission. You can prepare visual aids for defense: tables, charts, slides, presentations, etc.

It is better to prepare and rehearse in advance a speech - a solid reading of text does not seem worthy the highest points.

Be sure to remember the rules of courtesy: say hello to the audience, and in the end of you speech say to thank you for your attention.

2) questions of the commission and the audience. Thesis defense - public event, that is, any person may attend the presentation of the diploma project and ask questions. Commission will ask questions definitely - the absence of questions does not usually best characterize the level of thesis / performance - work did not cause interest.

Questions of the Commission can be simulated on pre-thesis or with a group / friends: each speaker and the audience ask questions starting from the simplest ("bike concept ", "what the authors have been studying this subject," "who invented the wheel") and ending with the identification of personal opinion ("Your opinion about the prospect of change from cars to bicycles, positive and negative consequences."). Sample questions can be worked out and based on the speech - someone might pay attention to the silence of the problem or other issues (names, statistics, classification, etc.).

Before answering the question, do not forget to thank him, and build the answer itself as fully as possible, accurately and concisely. Answer "I do not know," "it is difficult for me", and so and so of this character is not desirable, and in principle, is prohibited. The logic is simple: you're the only one in this audience who know the subject thoroughly (as much as it is possible, of course), and you should not allow to bring down a confused clever questions.

At this stage it is possible to see easily if a student wrote thesis by himself or did not.

3) review. Review - is a written explanation of the supervisor about the degree of worked of the theme with the conclusion about access / refusal in access to the defense. The procedure requires the personal presence of supervisor, that is why at the hands of the Commission review can be in written form, and the teacher will make a speech himself. If he did not come, a review commission will read a review with obligatory formula of decision on access or non-access.

Review - a written text, containing an analysis and evaluation of scientific work, given by the third-party, competitive in this field of knowledge. The quality of work, its compliance to standards, novelty is assessed in review, and also whether the author achieved the set goal. Reviewers may be, as a rule, either people with degree (having a degree), or practitioners in management positions. If you find a reviewer by yourself – inform about it in advance, that the leader gave information to make the order about the reviewers, otherwise the review will have no effect. Make sure that, in addition to praise, in this review there were:

1) determination on which thesis it is issued (your name, name of university, code and title of specialty, the topic of work)

2) full title of position/regalia of reviewer, his name and initials, signature, notarized by seal at the place of working;

3) remarks, i.e. lack in thesis, which, from one side, says that a reviewer looked through the thesis and you have something in what you can develop, from the other side – remark should not “kill” the thesis, i.e. should be adequate and uncritical, on which you can reply. The response should be agreed with the supervisor.

After you hear the review, you should than a reviewer (even if he is not at the auditorium now – this is the rule of courtesy of scientific world) and to answer maximally diplomatically on the remark.

4) final. Having heard your answer on the remark of reviewer, commission will give you a chance to say final speech, that can be considered as grateful (remember the ceremony of awarding, for example “Oskar”). Here the full freedom is given: you can thank group mates and teachers for great students years, knowledge and friendship or to wish to all success. The main thing: thank your supervisor. Any way under his\her supervision, but the thesis defense was performed:-)
